16th International Workshop on Technical and Scientific Aspects of iMST Radar and Lidar (MST16/iMST3)

On behalf of the international steering committee (ISC) of the MST workshop series it was a great pleasure of the local organising committee (LOC) to welcome you at the MST16/iMST3 workshop.

The sixteenth in this series took place in Rostock from September 9 - 13, 2024. The workshop was preceded by a 3-day iMST radar and lidar school in Kühlungsborn from September 6 - 8, 2024.

Since 1984, the MST workshops have been at the forefront of cutting-edge atmospheric and ionospheric research and technological development. In the spirit of evolution, MST16/iMST3 takes the exciting leap to incorporate iMST lidar observations and welcomes complementary studies combining radar, lidar, in-situ and other ground- and satellite-based techniques.

Papers addressed portions of the atmospheric domain extending from the Earth's surface to the ionosphere, with particular emphasis on the mesosphere, stratosphere and troposphere, and addressed a broad range of critical topics including, but not necessarily limited to:

  1. Tropospheric and stratospheric processes
  2. Planetary waves and tides in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere
  3. Gravity waves and turbulence
  4. Atmospheric and ionospheric layering
  5. Atmospheric and ionospheric vertical coupling
  6. Synergistic use of instruments and analysis techniques
  7. Recent advances and future plans

The International Steering Committee and the Local Organizing Committee eagerly anticipate reuniting the global iMST community after a long pause due to COVID-19. MST16/iMST3 was a memorable and enriching experience, advancing the boundaries of scientific knowledge of iMST observations and profiling. Several invited talks covered selected aspects of MST radar and lidar science.

Thank you for your valuable presence at MST16/iMST3!
